Manufacture des Gobelins Manufacture des Gobelins


The Manufacture des Gobelins was founded as a dye works in the mid-15th century by Jean Gobelin. In 1662, Louis XIV purchased the Gobelins manufactory and there Colbert united all the royal artisans, creating a royal tapestry and furniture works. Charles Le Brun was director and chief designer from 1663 to 1690. The Gobelins was temporarily closed from 1694 to 1697, after which the works specialized in tapestry.

"Chers Amis, Je vous écris à mon retour du Liban, où j'ai rencontré un collectionneur privé qui voudrait se séparer d'une magnifique tapisserie sortie des ateliers des Gobelins et de la Savonnerie, et intitulée "Cardinal et Evèque". Je vous serais reconnaissant de bien vouloir m'indiquer les personnes ou les organismes susceptibles de s'intéresser à cette petite merveille, qui fait plus de 400 mètres carrés. Il semble que la tapisserie, qui date du début 19-ème siècle, ait été acquise en Egypte auprès d'un Pacha désargenté.
